Ashley Robinson designed this garden-friendly version of the traditional stone and wood fence for kitchen herbs and vining vegetables such as beans and peas. Cedar posts were set deep in the gravel footing for the wall and the freestanding wall was built wide enough to allow the posts to come up through the hearting or packing stone in the center. After completion of the 30” wall, we ran strands of willow as a trellis between the cedar posts. The bed for the plantings is in the center of the wall—a ‘planted’ wall similar in principle to the sod-topped walls of the British Isles.
